Demolition and subfloor prep, done before the new floor ever shows up
A new floor is only as good as what's underneath it. Above Grade Flooring handles every step before installation day - old floor demolition, haul-away, dust control, moisture testing, and subfloor leveling - so the new floor sits flat, locks in tight, and isn't squeaking two winters from now.
We work on every existing flooring type: glue-down tile, nailed-down hardwood, floating laminate, sheet vinyl, and bonded carpet. Our crews show up with the right equipment - chipping hammers, ride-on scrapers, HEPA vacuums, self-leveling compound - and leave the space ready for the next crew to start immediately.

What's included in every demo and prep job
We work off a fixed scope, so there's nothing to negotiate mid-project. Every demo and prep job in the South Denver Metro covers the same baseline.
- Full removal of existing flooring (tile, hardwood, vinyl, carpet, laminate)
- Plastic sheeting and HEPA vacuum dust control
- Old material haul-away and disposal
- Subfloor inspection for rot, mold, and structural issues
- Moisture testing with calibrated meters
- Self-leveling compound to flatten high and low spots
- Final sweep so the next crew can start work immediately

Learn moreWhy we take dust control more seriously than most crews
Old thinset, tile, and hardwood adhesive can carry silica dust, glue residue, and occasionally asbestos in homes built before 1990 - and we see plenty of those across the older neighborhoods around Denver, Englewood, Lakewood, and Arvada. We seal off work areas with plastic, run HEPA-filtered air scrubbers, and wear proper PPE, which is standard on a commercial job site but rare on a residential one. You get a demo you can live next to without scrubbing dust out of the kitchen for a month afterward.

Leveling the floor - the step a lot of installers skip
A subfloor that's more than 1/8" out of level over 6 feet will cause LVP and laminate joints to fail within months, and tile set over an uneven slab will crack. That matters even more here, since the clay-heavy soils common across the South Denver Metro shift the ground under a slab seasonally, which is exactly the kind of movement that shows up as an uneven floor a few years later. We level every job to manufacturer tolerances with self-leveling underlayment and patch any soft spots before we ever call a floor ready - it's the difference between a floor that lasts and one that gets pulled up again in three years.

Demolition and prep pricing in the South Denver Metro
Pricing per square foot, materials and labor included. Most jobs are quoted as one flat price after an in-home walk-through.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Carpet / laminate / floating floor removal | $1.25 - $2.00 / sq ft | Includes haul-away |
| Glue-down vinyl removal | $2.00 - $3.50 / sq ft | More labor-intensive to pull up |
| Tile + thinset removal (over wood subfloor) | $3.00 - $5.00 / sq ft | Heavy chipping required |
| Tile + thinset removal (over concrete slab) | $3.50 - $6.50 / sq ft | Ride-on scraper used |
| Self-leveling underlayment | $2.50 - $4.50 / sq ft | Applied only where the floor actually needs it |
Flooring installed before 1990 that may contain asbestos requires testing and licensed abatement, which we coordinate but don't perform ourselves.
Floor Demolition & Prep - frequently asked questions
Yes - haul-away and disposal is built into the demo price. You won't find a scrap of old carpet or tile piled at your curb afterward.
We run HEPA-filtered air scrubbers, plastic sheeting, and ground-source vacuums on every chipping tool we use. Compared to a typical demo crew, you'll see noticeably less dust spreading into the rest of the house.
We check during the estimate. If it's within manufacturer tolerance (usually 1/8" over 6 feet), you're fine as-is. If it's not, we quote the leveling work as its own line item so you see exactly what it adds to the project.
Vinyl tile and mastic installed before 1990 can sometimes contain it. If we suspect it, we pause the job, send a sample out for testing, and bring in a licensed abatement contractor if it comes back positive - then we pick prep work back up once the area's cleared.
