Stair installation, done by one crew start to finish
A staircase takes more daily abuse than almost any other surface in a house, and it's usually the first thing a visitor sees. Above Grade Flooring - a family-run crew based in Lone Tree - builds and finishes hardwood staircases across the South Denver Metro that feel solid the day they're installed and still feel that way a decade later.
We keep the whole job under one roof: tearing out old carpet or worn treads, leveling the stringers underneath, milling nosings to match your existing floor, setting treads and risers, and finishing with a low-VOC sealer. One crew, one schedule, one warranty behind the whole job.

Solid or engineered treads?
Solid oak, maple, and hickory treads remain the standard for a reason - they can be sanded and refinished repeatedly, and a well-built solid staircase will outlast the mortgage on the house.
Engineered treads make more sense when you're matching an existing engineered floor, or building over a slab foundation. They resist the seasonal movement that causes squeaks, and once finished, they're indistinguishable from solid wood.
- Red oak, white oak, maple, hickory, and walnut - all stocked and ready to order
- Free sample boards stained to match your current floor
- Open-end, boxed, curved, and winding staircase styles
- Nosings milled in-house whenever a manufacturer doesn't carry a matching profile

We spend day one on demo and prep - pulling out old carpet, tile, or treads, vacuuming the staircase clean, and shimming any stringers that have gone loose so the new staircase doesn't inherit old squeaks. Day two is for setting treads, risers, and nosings with construction adhesive and finish nails, so there's nothing visible holding it together. Day three is finish work: staining if you've chosen a color, three coats of polyurethane, and a final walk-through.

Matching (or intentionally not matching) your existing floor
Most homeowners want their staircase to look like it was always part of the same floor, not a separate add-on. We pull from the same stain batch used on your hardwood flooring or hardwood refinishing job and match the sheen so the transition disappears. If you'd rather go the other direction - dark treads against painted white risers, for instance - we'll build a sample board for your approval before we order a single foot of material.

Hardwood stair pricing in the South Denver Metro
Most staircases in our service area run 13 to 16 stairs. Pricing below is per stair, materials and labor combined, and every quote is fixed before we start.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Red oak treads + risers, clear finish | $165 - $215 per stair | Our most commonly requested package |
| White oak or maple treads, stained | $195 - $260 per stair | Color-matched to your existing floor |
| Engineered hardwood treads | $175 - $235 per stair | The better pick over a concrete slab |
| Walnut or hickory treads | $230 - $310 per stair | For a higher-end, statement staircase |
Final pricing depends on stair count, the condition of your stringers, stain selection, and whether risers are wrapped or left painted. We measure in-home before quoting the full job, and ask about our senior and military discount.
Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions
In most cases, yes. We pull the carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip, then check the treads underneath. Solid treads in good shape get built on top of; particleboard or damaged treads get swapped for new ones as part of the same job.
A typical 14-stair job runs 2 to 3 days - demo the first day, installation the second, finishing the third. You can use the stairs the next morning, with a full 7-day cure before things like area rugs go back down.
That's the goal on nearly every job we take. We brush stain samples onto a scrap of the same wood species right in your home so you're picking from the real color under your own lighting, not a swatch from a brochure.
Not any more than other hard flooring. We finish with a matte or satin polyurethane rated for low slip, and for homes with pets or young kids we can add discreet anti-slip strips tucked under the nosing where they won't be seen.
