Laminate Stairs - the Hardwood Look Without the Hardwood Bill

A staircase takes more daily abuse than almost any other surface in the house, which makes it one of the worst places to cut corners on materials. Laminate solves that with a wear layer built to take the hit while still reading as hardwood from the top of the stairs. Laminate floats in the main room, but on a staircase it needs to be glued and mechanically fastened, or it will squeak within months. We run construction adhesive plus hidden brad nails behind the nosing on every tread, glue the riser caps down, and finish with color-matched caulk so there's no visible gap anywhere. Done this way, a laminate staircase stays silent, resists scratches, and is hard to tell from real hardwood at a glance.
