Why vinyl is a smart choice for stairs
Stairs need to be waterproof, scratch-resistant, and quiet all at the same time, and vinyl is really the only material that checks all three boxes. For households with kids, dogs, or basement stairs that see snowmelt and grocery bags every day, it holds up longer than hardwood or carpet without ever looking worn.
Above Grade Flooring installs luxury vinyl plank stairs throughout the South Denver Metro using the same plank going down in the adjoining room, so the staircase reads as one continuous floor rather than a separate project bolted on.

Custom nosings - the part that makes or breaks the look
Most LVP manufacturers don't sell a matching stair nosing, which is exactly why so many vinyl stair jobs look unfinished. We handle it two ways: using a factory-matched nosing when the manufacturer offers one, and milling a custom nosing from the same plank in-house when they don't. Either way, the front edge of every stair matches the tread color exactly - no aluminum trim, no contrast strip standing out.
- 20 mil and 30 mil wear layers, rated for commercial-level traffic
- A slip-resistant, micro-textured surface
- Click-lock or glue-down installation, whichever suits the staircase
- Custom-milled nosings to match any LVP brand we carry

Learn moreBuilt so it won't squeak or lift
Vinyl stair jobs usually fail one of two ways - planks lifting at the nosing from weak adhesion, or every step squeaking because the substrate wasn't prepped properly. We use a polyurethane construction adhesive along with hidden mechanical fasteners behind the nosing, and we skim-coat and level every tread before the plank goes down. The staircase ends up feeling as solid as hardwood, without any of hardwood's upkeep.

Vinyl stair pricing in the South Denver Metro
Pricing is per stair, materials and labor included, and covers the tread, riser wrap, and a custom-matched nosing.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard LVP stair (20 mil wear layer) | $95 - $135 per stair | Our most commonly requested option |
| Heavy-duty LVP (30 mil, commercial-grade) | $120 - $165 per stair | A good fit for rentals or homes with pets |
| Add-on: custom-milled matching nosings | +$25 - $40 per stair | When the manufacturer doesn't offer one |
Final pricing depends on stair count, whatever we're removing first, and whether risers are wrapped in vinyl or left painted. Ask about our senior and military discount.
Vinyl Flooring Stairs - frequently asked questions
Modern LVP comes embossed with a low-slip micro-texture built for stair use. It grips better underfoot than polyurethaned hardwood and performs similarly to commercial-grade LVT.
We start by pulling the carpet, pad, staples, and tack strip, then check the treads underneath. Solid wood treads just need a quick leveling pass before the LVP goes on; particleboard or damaged treads get replaced first.
Not if they're installed correctly. We re-secure every tread and add construction adhesive before the plank goes down, which typically makes the staircase quieter than it was to begin with.
We use a nosing that actually matches - either a factory piece from the plank manufacturer or one we mill ourselves from the same material. We don't fall back on a generic aluminum strip.
