Real wood, not a look-alike
Above Grade Flooring works exclusively with full 3/4-inch solid wood when a client wants the genuine article underfoot - no laminate, no printed layer standing in for real grain. Owner Brian Blaylock built the business around old-fashioned craftsmanship, and that shows most clearly on a solid hardwood job: every board is nailed by hand, sanded flat, and finished on-site so the seams disappear. Whether you're outfitting a newer home in Highlands Ranch or restoring the character of an older place in Denver or Arvada, we'll walk you through species, grain, and finish before a single board gets ordered.

Species, brands, and stain - all sourced direct
Solid hardwood is where Above Grade Flooring spends most of its time. We buy in volume straight from the mills - Lauzon, Appalachian Hardwood, Armstrong, Mirage, Aacer, Somerset, Vintage, Coswick, Sheoga, Mercier, Kahrs, Bruce, Owens, LM, Anderson, plus custom-milled runs when a client wants something none of those brands carry - which keeps our pricing well under big-box retail. If you'd rather start from unfinished wood, we'll stain and topcoat it to whatever color you have in mind, tested on a sample board first.

Learn moreHow we install solid wood floors
Our crews nail down or glue down solid hardwood over plywood, concrete (with the right underlayment), or particleboard subfloors, laid in whatever pattern the room calls for - straight, diagonal, or random-width for a traditional feel, or chevron, herringbone, basket weave, Monticello, Haddon Hall, and inlaid medallions for something custom. Every install follows accepted wood-flooring industry standards, and if you've seen a pattern somewhere you loved, our installers genuinely enjoy figuring out how to build it.

Solid wood on stairs - where craftsmanship shows the most
A staircase gets more attention than almost any other surface in a house, and hardwood stairs are unforgiving of shortcuts in a way carpeted stairs simply aren't. Because the job is almost entirely labor rather than material cost, the result depends far more on the installer's skill than on the wood itself. We build custom square nosings, floating stair details, open-riser designs, and solid site-finished treads - each staircase treated as its own project rather than a stock part bolted into place.

Solid hardwood pricing in the South Denver Metro
Material-only ranges for the solid species we install most often. Installation, sanding, and finishing are quoted after we see the space in person.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Red oak / white oak (select) | $6.49 - $9.99 / sq ft | Our most-requested species - classic grain, decades of refinishing life. |
| Maple & ash | $6.99 - $10.99 / sq ft | Tight, even grain for a cleaner, contemporary look. |
| Hickory | $7.99 - $12.99 / sq ft | The toughest domestic wood we carry - built for busy households. |
| Walnut | $9.99 - $15.99 / sq ft | A darker, richer tone for dining rooms and formal spaces. |
Prices shown are for material only - underlayment, trim, demo, and finishing are quoted on-site. Send rough room dimensions for a same-day estimate, and ask about our senior and military discount.
Real & Solid Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions
Installed and cared for correctly, solid hardwood commonly lasts 50 to 100+ years, and it can be sanded and refinished somewhere between 6 and 10 times over that span - one of the few flooring choices that tends to add resale value rather than just holding it.
Not directly - solid boards need to be nailed into wood, so over a slab we either build up a plywood deck first or steer you toward engineered hardwood, which glues down to concrete and stays stable through our seasonal humidity swings.
Prefinished boards are sealed at the factory, which means a faster install but a slight bevel between each plank. Site-finished hardwood is sanded and coated after it's nailed down in your home, which takes longer but leaves a perfectly flat, custom-colored surface with no seams between boards.
Solid boards expand and contract with heat and moisture more than most radiant systems allow, so we typically recommend engineered hardwood in those rooms. If solid wood is non-negotiable, we'll spec narrower, quarter-sawn boards to keep movement to a minimum.
