Colorado's dry, high-altitude climate is beautiful - and hard on wood floors if you don't plan for it. Here's how to keep hardwood looking its best from winter to summer across the south metro.
Manage Winter Dryness
When the furnace runs all winter, indoor air gets extremely dry and wood floors shrink, sometimes opening small gaps between boards. A whole-home or room humidifier that keeps indoor humidity in a steady range (roughly 35-55%) is the single best thing you can do for hardwood in this climate.
Protect Against High-Altitude Sun
At altitude, UV is stronger and finishes fade and gray faster than in lower, cloudier places. Use area rugs in bright, south- and west-facing rooms, rotate them seasonally, and consider UV-filtering window coverings to keep the color even across the floor.
Clean It Right
Sweep or vacuum regularly, wipe up spills quickly, and clean with a product made for hardwood. Skip steam mops and sopping-wet mopping - excess water is as bad for wood here as anywhere. When the finish finally wears, refinishing resets the floor to like-new.
